26.03.2011 J5 XV v Malahide (H)
26/03/2011 | 3:00pm | League | St. Marys J5 XV | 13 – 7 | Malahide | Home |
J5 XV 13-7 Malahide
A defensive display of Herculean proportions saw the J5s continue on their path towards the league title against a tough Malahide side, on Templeville Road last Saturday. Much of the first half was spent in the Mary’s twenty two, as the visitors strove to upset the league leaders’ title hopes, but wave after wave of attack was repelled and against the run of play, Mary’s managed to pick off a penalty from the boot of Daithi Crowley, on one of their few forays into the opposition half. Malahide failed to register a score in the first half and must have felt thensleves unlucky to be three points down at the break.
The visitors once again started strongly when the game resumed and went over early on in the second half for the game’s firts five pointer, which was duly converted. From that point on however, the tide began to turn in the home side’s favour, as Mary’s began to impose their superior skill level on the game. Their steady pressure was rewarded with a further penalty, this time from the boot of Gary Crawford, which seemed to signal the beginning of a change in the momentum of the game. An onslaught of attacking rugby was eventually rewarded as an explosive burst from centre, Kieran Morrissey resulted in a try underneath the posts, with the supplimentary two added by Gary Crawford, to establish a six point lead. This was to prove enough for Mary’s, who despite having to resist a late flurry from Malahide, sealed a victory that sees them well poised to secure the league title, needing only one win from their remaining two games.
