Mini Rugby at St. Mary's — since 1989

Mini rugby began at Templeville Road around 1989-90 and has grown into one of the biggest mini sections in the country. Every Sunday morning, boys and girls from Little Rugby (age 3) to Under 12 learn the game from more than 90 volunteer coaches, all of them vetted and trained.

Generations of St Mary's players started here. The first mini squad included Shane Jennings, and later minis include Jack McGrath and Darragh Fanning. Many more went on to play for the club's senior teams, and many of today's coaches are former minis or their parents.

“I was lucky Eileen was a huge rugby fan. She was a coach and one of the pioneers of Mini rugby in St Mary's, and did most of the heavy lifting with the kids.”— Declan Fanning, Leinster captain and club great, in Leinster Rugby's "Where are they now?" (March 2026)

Timeline
c.1989-90Organised mini rugby begins at Templeville Road — at first an ad hoc arrangement looked after by Paul Andreucetti, Gerry Rylands and Dermot Nevin. The following season John Pyne and Eileen Fanning became the first official organisers.
1990sThe section grows fast. Toni Brennan and Joyce Farnan take on the job of developing and directing it, coaching on the pitch week in, week out and ferrying teams around the county and further afield. Eileen Fanning's name becomes "almost synonymous with Mini Rugby at St Marys"; John Hammond, Anne McInerney and Louise Crotty are among the other great organisers.
1994-95More than 150 children aged 6 to 14 are coached every Sunday morning by a team of 15 adult coaches, and the mini teams reach the final stages of several competitions. Long-serving mini coach Ray Joyce dies at the end of the season; the Ray Joyce Perpetual Cup for U10s later carries his name.
2002-2008Trophies for the older minis: the U12 Joe Soden Trophy and Irish Festival of Rugby Blitz (2003), the U12 Wanderers Perpetual Trophy (2005), the U12 Metropolitan Cup — won away to Navan (2007) — and the U12 Marr Trophy and U10 Seapoint Blitz (2008).
2005-06About 200 children from U7 to U12, often three teams per age group. The U12s tour Glasgow (hosted by Marr RFC) and the club hosts Whitchurch (Manchester) and two Italian sides from Rome and Milan.
2009-2014Numbers keep climbing — over 250 players in 2009-10, 347 boys and girls in 2012-13 and 402 in 2013-14. Annual fixtures with Belfast Harlequins, U12 trips to Cork Constitution, and Medal Days with Leinster and Ireland stars such as Jonathan Sexton, Shane Jennings, Jack McGrath and Rhys Ruddock.
2010-11Touring minis from Cork Constitution and Currie (Edinburgh) visit on 26 March 2011 and Belfast Harlequins the next day, and the U12s travel to Cork.
August 2013The club Family Day includes "Tots Rugby" for 2 to 4 year olds, an early forerunner of today's Little Rugby.
2015-16Over 350 players; a trip to Shannon, a memorial blitz hosted by the U10s, half-time games at Senior and Leinster matches, and the U12s' end-of-season tour to Italy.
2017-2020More than 80 volunteer coaches, all Garda-vetted. An annual Mini Pro 14 tournament, Christmas party, End of Season Fun Day and U12 overseas trip become fixtures of the calendar. In December 2018 the U12s play at half-time of Leinster v Connacht at the RDS.
2021-22The girls' U12 team play Half-Time Minis at Ireland v Wales in the Women's Six Nations at the RDS (26 March 2022).
2022-23Dedicated girls' teams at U8, U10 and U12, and the club's first Girls' Blitz in May 2023, with the Six Nations trophy and Triple Crown on show.
2023-24"Little Rugby" launched for children aged 3 to 5. The club hosts the Leinster Mini Festival (23 March 2024) and the Leinster Girls U10 & U12 Festival (20 April 2024). Over 400 children every Sunday morning.
2025-26St. Mary's minis run out at half-time of Leinster v Sharks at the Aviva Stadium (October 2025). Over 90 volunteer coaches — one of the largest mini programmes in Ireland. In April 2026 the club enters 13 teams (U7 to U9) in the Old Belvedere Blitz.

Mini Honours

Up to U9, mini rugby is non-competitive, and the club has always put participation before results. These are the trophies recorded in the club's honours lists. None have been recorded since 2007-08.

Girls' Mini Rugby

Girls have played in St Mary's mini teams for many years. In 2011-12 the club thanked Yvonne Dooley for her work for girls' mini rugby, and from 2012-13 the mini numbers were counted as "boys and girls". Girls-only teams followed. The girls' U12s played at half-time of the Women's Six Nations at the RDS in March 2022. In 2022-23 the club fielded girls' U8, U10 and U12 teams and held its first Girls' Blitz.

The section now runs U6/7/8 and U10/12 groups. In 2024-25 it had over 50 registered girls, one of the largest girls' mini groups in the Leinster Metro area. In April 2024 the club hosted the Leinster Girls U10 & U12 Festival. The pathway carries on through girls' youth rugby to the senior women's team.
