Youth Rugby at St. Mary's

The club's first youth teams appeared in 2005-06. In 2010-11 Mick O'Flaherty and Mikey Coyle relaunched the section with a single team, and since then it has grown every season into one of the club's great success stories: about 200 boys and girls from U13 to U18.5, including the Mary's Stars inclusive team.

The first youth trophy came in 2012. In November 2025 the U18.5s won the Leinster Youth Cup. Girls' youth rugby has grown alongside the boys', often in partnership with neighbouring clubs, and the section is the link between the minis and the club's U20, junior and senior teams.

Timeline
1968-69Long before there is a youth section, Johnny Moloney captains Leinster Youths against Cardiff in his first season at the club.
1990sThe club's U19s (forerunners of today's U20s) produce Leinster and Ireland U19 players, but there is no youth section below them yet. The centenary history lists eight Ireland Youth internationals of the 1990s who played for the club, among them Trevor Brennan and Mark McHugh — most of them came up through school rugby.
2005-06Youth rugby begins with the first under-age teams above the minis. The U13s win the Plate at the Pat Lawlor Memorial Blitz in Limerick, and Louise Crotty's under-age set-up aims to run "from U7s up to U16s". A girls' U16 team is in formation.
2007-2010U13 and U14 teams by 2007-08, then a single U13 side in 2008-09 and 2009-10 (managed by Michael O'Flaherty in 2009-10) as numbers fall away.
2010-11Youth rugby is relaunched as its own section by Michael (Mick) O'Flaherty and Michael (Mikey) Coyle, with Leinster community rugby officer Daragh O'Kelly. It starts again with one team, drawing players from Templeogue College, St Mac Dara's, St Colmcille's, Drimnagh Castle and other schools.
2011-12Over 80 youths at U13, U15 and U17. The U17s win the Metro Plate final against Suttonians at Templeville Road — "the first ever Youth Trophy for the club". The section hosts touring sides Sutton & Epsom, Southport and Kirkby Lonsdale from England and Oltremella from Italy, and Mick O'Flaherty and Mikey Coyle start the Youth Disco, which becomes a fixture of the calendar.
2012-14Back-to-back U19 Metro Cups (2013 and 2014), plus the U19 Schools/Youths Cup in 2013 against Malahide. Orrell and Devizes visit in 2012-13. Eric O'Sullivan is selected for Leinster U18 Clubs and then Leinster Schools; he later plays for Ulster and Ireland. In March 2014 Templeville Road hosts the Leinster U17 and U19 Premier League finals.
2014-15Five boys' teams from U13 to U19. Girls' youth rugby restarts under Sarah Fallon (later Brennan-Fallon), with U15 and U18 girls' awards that season. David Aspil (Leinster Clubs U18) goes on to win Ireland U20 caps in 2016-17. At the Youth Awards on 23 May 2015, Mikey Coyle is named Club Person of the Year and Mick O'Flaherty receives a special award.
2015-2019Aidan Manahan takes over as Director of Youth Rugby. U13 to U18.5 boys and a girls' squad. Around 2015 the U19s tour Ghent in Belgium and bring home two trophies; in March 2019 the U18s play Biarritz.
2019-20Robbie O'Neill (with Aaron Gernon) takes over the youth section. He is still director today.
2021-22Six teams and over 140 players. The U14s win their league section and the U18.5s reach the Premier league final. Daniel Leane plays for Ireland U19, Senan Phelan for Ireland U18 Clubs, and Laoise Devlin and Anna Brennock for Leinster U18 Girls. The U13s (the 2009 group) finish their season with a trip to Carlingford, and their coaches start the Michael Farrelly Trophy for U13 Teammate of the Year.
2022-23Seven teams and over 160 players. The season opens in October 2022 with the U13 A and B sides beating Greystones 35-7 and 55-0 at Kenilworth Square. The U13As win the Leinster Section A League (25-10 v Old Belvedere) and the Leinster Cup (v Seapoint), and both U13 sides reach league finals. The girls' U14s win the Leinster Division 4 final 15-14 against Rathdrum, and the U16 girls play with MU Barnhall. Four players are picked for the Shane Horgan Cup.
2023-24Nearly 200 youth players. In October 2023 Robbie and Charlie O'Neill start the Mary's Stars, an inclusive team. The U16 girls join De La Salle Palmerston as "De La Marys", and five U18 girls join the CDS combined squad (Coolmine, DLSP, Seapoint). The U14 girls reach the Leinster Division 4 final.
2024-25The girls' youth teams join up with De La Salle Palmerston as De La Marys, at U16 and at U18 (listed by Leinster Rugby as DLSM in the Girls Cup).
2025-26The best season yet. The U18.5s win the Leinster Youth Cup at the fourth time of asking (13-7 v DLSP, 2 November 2025). The U16 boys win the Metro Cup against Seapoint and reach the Leinster Youth Cup and Premier League finals. The U16 girls win their Leinster League final against Ravens, and the U18 girls lose their final only on the first-try rule. Ten teams are honoured at the Youth Awards, and the U14 boys play as SMTC with Terenure College.

The De La Marys U16s beat Rathdrum and ABC (27-12), and in November 2024 25 players tour to Galway Corinthians; a second U16 side, the "DLM Babas", beat Barnhall 35-17.
