This years cup campaign opened at home against old belvedere on Sunday, the St. Marys girls were hoping to improve upon their league performance which ended before Christmas. The team was massively burdened by injury since the start of the season but this game saw the return of some key players including Captain Grainne Egan. The first blood went to belvedere after 20 minutes with an unconverted try and this was the only score of the first half. Early in the second half captain Egan crossed the white line to make the game even, 5-5. This was replied to with two tries from belvedere, 19-5. By the 55 minute mark St. Marys were down to 13 players due to injuries but the girls continued to show their ambition and determination by scoring a second try in the dying seconds of them game. This try once again came from Grainne Egan who was a standout player of the match as always. Final score St. Marys 10 – Belvo 19. This was a great match for the girls in blue who will hope to build on the massive improvements made during the last few weeks. There were many players of note this week including Grainne Egan and Melissa Hayden coming back from injury, Shayne Richardson who made her debut at second row and Ann-Marie Rooney who made the transition from front row to inside centre.
