U16 Girls Rugby Update

Despite girls rugby players numbers on a steady increase in St Marys we are still just short of having enough players to have our own stand-alone U16 Marys team, so this season the girls have teamed up with the De La Salle Palmerston girls down in Kilternan to form De La Marys (DLM).

The Club is hoping, with the roll out of the ‘Give It A Try’ programme (dates to be announced very soon), that more girls will sign up and give rugby a try and discover what a rewarding and positive experience playing rugby can be, and hopefully by next season we will have a full U16 St Marys girls team.

Back to the ‘DLMs’!

As you can imagine, it can sometimes be difficult to merge two teams from well established clubs but this has most certainly not been the case with ‘De La Marys’. With training and matches being alternated (also dependent on levels of ‘water logging’!) between Templeville and Kilternan there has always been a very equal input from both clubs, management and teams and this has helped build a strong unity within the group.

Right from the get-go this amalgamation has been a great success. The girls bonded early on (a bus trip to Wexford got the ball rolling) and have gone on to form a really tight unit – a unit that are determined, incredibly hard working both in training and on match day, and who have created a great ‘never say die’ attitude. And these traits has been very clear in every match they’ve played.

So far this season’s fixtures have taken the girls down to Wexford, across to Roscrea and over the river to Clontarf and there have been other glamour fixtures to Carlingford and Greystones that have unfortunately had to be postponed/cancelled due to the weather not playing ball, but these might still be played before the season is done. The DLM girls have also welcomed teams from Naas, Clontarf and Longford for home fixtures so it’s be fair to say they’re getting a great feel for just how big girls rugby is in  the province of Leinster!

For anyone who is interested in playing and being a part of the best team sport in the world, keep an eye out for the programme and dates for ‘Give It A Try’ and we hope to see you down scoring a try at St Marys very soon.
