Women XV v Blackrock (H) 04.10.2015

For the St. Marys girls round three of the AIL kicked off at home against Blackrock in Templeville road on Sunday. The girls in blue knew going into the match that it would be a tough battle as Blackrock were top of the table winning their first two matches. The first half saw numerous penalties coming from both sides and at the half time whistle St. Marys were down 7-0, a score that the visitors were unlikely to have predicted. Unfortunately when the second half kicked off all the points went in the favour of the visitors when they scored two penalty kicks and two tries. In the 66th minute captain Grainne Egan put the home team on the scoreboard in a similar fashion to her try last week, blocking down a kick and chasing it to cross the try line, making it 25-5. After a warning from the referee over multiple penalties St Marys saw yellow three minutes after the try. Blackrock replied to this effort with a try of their own but marys worked hard and hooker Emma Kiernan scored a second try in the dying seconds of the game to narrow the defeat. Final score St. Marys 10 – Blackrock 30. Captain Grainne Egan once again deserves recognition massive effort all around the pitch and leading the team by example. Super sub Caroline Hannigan also stood out this week as she moved into multiple positions due to injuries without any hesitations. Blackrock remain top of the table after round three but the ail takes a break this week and the St marys girls will be hoping to get back to winning ways on Friday 16th away to Railway in round 4, the match kicks off at 8pm and all support is welcome.
