Fresh from celebrating the J4 League title, St. Mary’s started their campaign to win back the Winters Cup, which they clinched dramatically in 2009, against Tallaght in Templeville Road on Saturday.
It was an injury-hit Mary’s team which took to the pitch, with 7 players missing from our regular starting line-up, it was a chance for some lads in the squad to get well-earned game time and to remind certain members of the management why exactly they retired in the first place!
As always, Tallaght arrived with a large, physical side and gave us a tough game, but a try from winger Nick Cunningham in the first half and 11 points from the boot of stand-in out-half, David Carpenter, was enough to see us through to the second round, despite a converted try from Tallaght with the last play of the game.
Final score: St. Mary’s 16-13 Tallaght.
