St Mary’s College J2 V Seapoint J2

The J2’s secured a hard fought 13-7 win away to Seapoint on Saturday. Kilbogget park must be the wettest and windiest place in the country and invariably it is a place where you cant play much rugby. The wind was blowing straight down the middle of the pitch and fortunately we won the toss and decided to play into it. Naturally enough Seapoint kept us pinned in our half for much of the first half with long kicks but we did play some good rugby and against the strong wind played the right tactics of keeping the ball and going through the phases, Killian Lannen and Graham Foran in the back row had very strong first halves, and the pack as a whole really took it to the seapoint 8. We managed to keep them to 3 points and got a penalty of our own through Alan Shirley, so at 3-3 going into the second half and with the ridiculous wind at our backs we were confident of racking up a few points. Things started well and we scored a try from close range through Eoin Keane. Then on two occasions Alan Conboy cut them to pieces from fullback only to be denied inches from the line. At this stage we were getting pinged by the ref constantly at rucktime when trying to fight for the ball which we found very confusing, and not helped by the torrential rain, our gameplay was distrupted and so we only managed one more score from Greame McInerney after a strong run from the fit again Rob Smith. All in all it was a satisfying win and we still sit on top of the table, the next three games before christmas will decide our season, Lansdowne, Blackrock and Terenure.
