J5 XV 3-22 Terenure
On Friday the J5 XV took on Terenure in the Semi Final of the O’Connor Cup down in Lakeland. We didnt have the best of preparations for this game. A number of players were missing due to injury and holidays. The tough and long league succes had taken its toil on a number. Despite this we got a strong side together for this Derby Game.
Terenure started the better. Going over for an early score. 0-5. From the re-started we refocused ourselves and tried to play ourselves back into the game. We had some could breaks from the backs, notably from centre Morrissey. We were getting momentum up and playing strong. Terenure had a man in the bin for a trip at a ruck. As the game got midway through the half, we continued to make the breaks. Outhalf Crawford tried to break through the Terenure defence inside their 22. When he hit the ground his shoulder disclocated. The game was delayed for 10 minutes as a result. Thankfully it wasnt too long before his shoulder when back into place. We had to resuffle our back line after the injury. When the game started again we were slow to get back into it. Terenure when over for another try before the break. We got a penalty just before half time. 3-12 at the break.
Terenure started the 2nd half the stronger and wen in for an early try. 3-19. Straight after the try we upped our game and tried to get back into it. It was a tough battle for the rest of the half. We spent long spells in their half but just couldnt get a score. Terenure rounded the game off with a late drop goal. Final Score 3-22.
Credit to the lads for keeping the fight going right til the end. Its just a pity that we can up short on the night after such a great season.
Many thanks to Pikey, and from the U21’s The Fridge and Murphy for playing on the night.
Thanks to coaches Ian Murray, Ian McCarthy, Andy Fitzpatrick and captain Anthony O’Hanlon for all the hard work put in throughout the season. Thanks also to the players for putting it in week in week out.
Our numbers this season were very good. We had enough to fill two teams over the course of the season. We had a number of J5 B Friendlies. Thanks to Hugh Hogan for players some of his U21’s in these games.
We have one more competition on the Saturday 14 May to finish the season off. It is the D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz.
After so many years with this group of players we finally won that league title. Let’s hope for more of the same over the next few seasons.
