Vets & Other Junior Teams

The J6 and Vets, the J7 and J8 XVs of earlier years, touch and tag rugby, and junior rugby tours.

Alongside the J2 to J5 XVs, St. Mary's have fielded many other junior sides over the years. In the 1970s the club was putting out upwards of ten teams a week, with J6, J7 and J8 XVs winning the Fox, Greenlea and Guilfoyle Cups. Since the 2000s the J6 has been the club's over-35s team, the Vets, who still meet for tag rugby every Wednesday night.

Much of this history is only partly recorded. If you have results, team lists, photographs or memories of any of these teams, please send them to archives@smcrfc.com and they'll be added here.

The J6 & Vets XV

From the sixth XV to the over-35s.

The J6 was the club's sixth XV, and its Leinster competition was the Tom Fox Memorial Cup (the Fox Cup). St. Mary's first won it in 1977, and have won it seven times. By the 2000s the J6 and the club's over-35s Veterans' Group were one team, listed in the membership books as "Junior 6 XV (Over 35s)" and today as Vets / Junior 6 XV / Over 35 Tag.

The Vets play full-contact games against other clubs' Vets sides and touring teams, and Vets tag rugby takes place in the club every Wednesday night, open to all members over 35. In the club yearbook's words, they are "former players from all ranks, who want to continue playing, but at a more leisurely pace."

2008/09 The first season of the Vets League

St. Mary's Vets opened the new league with a 7 tries to 3 home win over Malahide in November 2008, and beat Seapoint 34–12 in December despite playing with 14 men. A wet trip to Carlow in January 2009 ended in a 19–21 defeat. Visiting touring sides from Luxembourg, Milan, Washington and Leiden were also hosted at Templeville Road that spring.

Vets tag was played on Wednesday evenings throughout the year, and in 2006–09 the membership book described the Veterans' Group as playing "tag and contact rugby on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. All over 35s are welcome to come along and join the group."

2009/10 Vets League runners-up Runners-up

Captained by Charlie Hamilton, the Vets beat Carlow home and away and were runners-up in the league. After the 36–12 win in Carlow in February 2010 the captain's report said the team were "unbeaten this season", with the bonus-point win keeping them top of the league table. The season opened with a 9–6 win over the Austrian touring side Wiener Neustadt Wombats.

2010/11 The French Parliamentarians

On the morning of the Ireland v France Six Nations game in February 2011, the Vets took on the French Parliamentarians' XV. According to the club yearbook, the average age of the French team was 59 and of the St. Mary's team 45, and both teams went on to a reception at the French ambassador's residence.

Earlier in the season the Vets beat Brent Pope's International Vets XV 10–5. In the league they lost 0–38 to Clontarf, and in the Fox Cup they lost 14–18 to Terenure.

2011/12 Guilfoyle-James Cup semi-final

In January 2012 six Vets helped the J5s fulfil a league fixture against Terenure, when Sam Brennan played competitive rugby for the club in a fifth decade.
