St Mary’s College RFC v Galwegians 20 August 2011

Saturday 20 August 20011 started as a sunny morning, and it was to remain that way for the day, especially in the West. And so in optimistic mood, our First Team panel of 27 led by Hugh Hogan together with Peter Smyth – Head Coach, Terry Tierney – Manager, Kevin Conboy – Director of Rugby and John Gilsenan – President travelled by coach to Glenina to play Galwegians as part of pre-season preparations.

It was a friendly match of four 20 minute quarters, but nonetheless it commenced very competitively and at a fast pace. It was mainly played around the half way line for the first ten minutes or so until Galwegians first threatened and very nearly scored. That spurred us on and a few moments later we swept forward to their 22 for the first time.

The distinction of scoring the first try of the new season went to our new strong and pacy winger Marcus O’Driscoll who has just joined us from Shannon. Marcus hails originally from Rathgar so he should have no trouble settling in at Templeville Road.

Conor Hogan was in next and Hugh Hogan completed the scoring to leave us 19 – 0 up at quarter 1 time.

Quarter 2 saw 20 minutes of stern Galwegians defence and a few missed opportunities by us resulting in an unchanged scoreboard.

However, scores were ratcheted up again in our favour in Quarter 3 when Richard Sweeney and then Chris Lillie powered over for tries both converted by Conor Hogan (who converted 5 from 6 in total). Galwegians did deservedly score through Eoin McKeon (thank you to Pat McMahon for the research on the try scorer!).

In Quarter 4, Stephen Grissing and Hugh Hogan completed the St Mary’s tally to no further reply from Galwegians. Final Score 47 – 5

All in all, it was a very worthwhile early season test. Despite the scoreline, Galwegians put up a very decent showing and our squad were all well exercised by match end and welcomed the delicious food prepared by our hosts to fortify us for the night ahead!
