St. Marys U16 girls match report – 17.02.24

De La Marys 17 New Ross 48

The De La Mary’s U16 girls took on New Ross last weekend at DLSP in Kilternan and, despite a really hard fought contest, were unfortunately at the wrong end of a 17-48 scoreline. Once again the score most definitely does not do the DLM team justice for just how competitive a game this was.

DLM started brightly and were camped on the New Ross line for the first 15 minutes. However, the visitors, through an ever-increasing penalty count (they’d clearly read Richie McCaw’s book on the ‘dark arts’ during the week) kept DLM at bay, and in fact broke away to score at the other end of the pitch. Twice.

DLM kept their heads up and managed, through some storming midfield runs, to finally get on the scoreboard with a well deserved try of their own to bring the scores closer at the half-time break.

The second half was another tight affair. However as DLM’s monumental first half efforts began to take their toll, New Ross started to spread the ball wide to their lightening quick wing who went on to score two second half tries, on top of the two she scored on the first half.

But as this DLM team has shown in previous games, they never stop fighting and showed great character in coming back to score two tries in the last 10 minutes. Another hard fought match for the DLM girls but there was definitely plenty of good points to work on this week before they take on Clontarf away this Saturday.
